Research Experience for Undergraduates
Summer 2008 Program

NEW Program Dates: June 23, 2008 - August 29, 2008


Eligibility:

  1. Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled in a degree program which leads to a bachelor's degree. Women and students from traditionally underrepresented groups and institutions are encouraged to apply.

  2. Must be available for the entire 10 week session. You may not arrive after the session has commenced and you may not leave before the final day.

  3. Must not graduate before December 2008.

Research Opportunities:

Each student will work with a faculty mentor, as well as other professors, researchers and graduate students on a research project. Research topics include, but are not limited to: condensed matter physics, astrophysics, high energy physics, and biophysics. Projects may involve experiment, theory and computational simulations. Additional activities:

  • Students will present their research at a campus-wide undergraduate research conference.

  • Presentations/seminars by UCSD faculty on a wide range of physics topics.

  • Information on graduate school and the Physics GRE.

  • Library research training and paper writing workshops.

  • Laboratory safety training.

  • Computer training.

  • Social events with participants in other campus research programs.

  • Opportunities to explore the beautiful areas around UCSD.

Funding is provided by National Science Foundation

All participants will receive:

  • $3300 stipend for the 10-week program.

  • Complimentary housing accommodations in conveniently located campus apartments.

  • Travel allowance.

Required application materials:

  • Application form (submitted online; start by creating an account).

  • Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a physics professor (submitted online following the instructions provided during the online application process).
